Including fruits and vegetables in your diet is vital for a healthy lifestyle. Equally important is ensuring they are clean, free from dirt, grime, and pesticides.

Since 2004, the Environmental Working Group has been ranking non-organic produce with the highest pesticide levels, known as The Dirty Dozen. This organization focuses on promoting a healthier environment and uses data from the USDA and FDA for their analysis.

The Environmental Working Group found that 75% of traditional fresh produce tested had traces of harmful pesticides. However, for the items on the Dirty Dozen list, a staggering 95% of samples were contaminated with pesticides.

"Some pesticides have been associated with adverse effects in human studies, such as miscarriages, birth defects, and issues with learning or development in children," as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Strawberries and spinach maintained their positions at the top of the list for this year, ranking at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Grapes made a significant jump from No. 8 in 2023 to No. 4 in 2024.

3 easy steps to wash your fruits and vegetables

Thoroughly clean your hands and all necessary utensils, like cutting boards, both before and after you wash your produce. This advice comes from the CDC.

Once your hands are clean, a registered dietitian nutritionist and Premier Protein Nutrition Consultant and Personal Trainer, Carissa Galloway, recommended to CNBC Make It that you follow these steps:

– Hold the produce under cold water in the sink.

– Use a clean paper towel or a brush dedicated to cleaning produce to remove any dirt and grit.

– Dry the produce with a clean paper towel or a salad spinner if you're not eating it immediately to maintain its freshness.

Using baking soda or vinegar to clean your fruits and vegetables is not necessary, even though it has gained popularity.

The CDC advises strongly against using soap, detergent, or store-bought washes to clean your fruits and vegetables.

Galloway suggested that while there are other options and theories, the best choice is to simply wash produce under cold water.
